In the beginning of the TV show Lost, we were intrigued by the strange setting and the interesting people in it. Characters were likeable, they had good relationships, every scene answers the previous mystery with a new mystery. That is the first half of Sphere.
e.g.
It's not a plane crash. It's an alien spaceship. It's been there for hundreds of years. It didn't crash. It's an American spaceship etc
At the end of the TV show Lost, the inconsistencies of all the mysteries presented added up, and the only way to avoid it all unraveling was to have characters behave unnaturally, not ask or answer obvious questions. Cut scenes weirdly to not present information that you need to understand what is happening. That is the second half of Sphere.
e.g.
Norman: "Did you go in the Sphere Beth?" Beth: (20 second pause because it will break the plot) "You don't want to talk to me"
It's not perfect, and has frustrating elements, but it's good scifi and you should definitely watch it.
The movie is not terrible at all. The psychic and sci-fi elements and the story are great in my eyes as of lover of this genre. Can not compare to the book, but the movie made me want to read it.
