My revelation was how much of it Aaron Sorkin recycled for The West Wing. This politically savvy romance between a widower president (Michael Douglas) and a sassy lobbyist (Annette Bening) was in many ways the template for the hit television drama. Many of the same actors, characters (in all but name) and issues (for example, the virtue of proportional response) are on show. Fascinating to look at it post-West Wing, but of course, it's a charming and well-written piece in its own right, and a trademark Sorkin inspirational speech at the end.

I watched this movie because I love The West Wing so much...

Jesus, it was cheesy, corny, and not even credible. I mean, I didn't believe a second in that romance. Annette Bening has no charm at all and Michael Douglas is really a bad choice to play POTUS. The tone of his voice is just not right, he doesn't have a presidential voice.

That movie was really painful to watch through the end. At least there were some funny lines here and there...

Perhaps Sorkin's funniest writing, with all the wit, intelligence, and charm of West Wing. It seems a little unbalanced as a political drama and romantic comedy but when it dives hard into one it really works.
