I found this a stodgy & un-involving film, with too much narration and underwhelming characters. It's well shot (Jack Cardiff, so it would be), but I struggle to see why it's so highly rated on Cahiers du cinema or They Shoot Pictures lists.
Ava Gardner is "The world's most beautiful animal!"
This is the type of movie that really makes me wonder why more people don't talk about Joseph L. Mankiewicz as one of the top Hollywood directors.
