The reason that part 2 is hailed as one of the best sequels of all time is because it's a perfect continuation of the storyline. Part 3 loses a lot of that magic, it feels worn out and a shadow of its former self. I can't help but wonder if maybe instead of making Michael out to be a regretful old man they should have gone a more sinister route, perhaps an aging mafia kingpin desperate to keep the reigns of power. I don't know, maybe it would have made a better plotline. Sofia Coppola ruins a great deal of the picture, just goes to show that nepotism can ruin the most golden of movie legacies. If you read some of the backstory behind her casting you'll fully understand why it utterly failed. When Winona Ryder had to drop out, poor Sofia was cast into the role and filming scenes in a matter of hours. Add zero acting experience and it's a recipe for certain disaster.
I have a kind of love/hate relationship with this one. On one hand I like having another installment of the storyline but it's just not spectacular. On that one dramatic and heartbreaking scene at the end, I end up feeling nothing for Sofia's character and everything for Michael.
