"The Long Day Closes" is one of the best films I've seen in a while. A sumptuous tour through sense memory, the film is further proof that under the cool exterior of British stoicism lies a sentimentality guided by perspective.

I don't like Davies or this film but if there's one thing this film isn't it's pretentious. It's clearly very personal and emotionally sincere.

It's a pure film. While its poetry (and, unfortunately, a lot of the musical choices) don't speak directly to me and my sensibilities, it's truly unlike other films.
Pretentious? Not so much. I think of it as of a poem.

it is the third movie in Terence Davies's autobiographical series, the other two movies being The Terence Davies Trilogy (1983) and Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988)

This could have been great but the acting was weak, the direction was too theatrical and there was very little to keep my interest. The cinematography was pretty good though.

Good cinematography but that's about it. Overly pretentious and boring. There's a minute long close-up of a rug, for crying out loud.
