This short is more important for its special effects than its plot. I read Walt Disney won an Oscar for this, so maybe we shouldn't be so choosy by judging this short as overrated. And btw, aren't we all happy all the animals survived the dire storm?
A notable milestone in the evolution of animation. You can see that Disney was really trying to push hand-drawn animation to its limit. Every frame is beautifully and meticulously crafted. The opening scene with the shimmering spider web is absolutely stunning when you consider someone had to draw all that by hand.
