Apart from seeing different interpretations of the musical's title song every now and then on TV, this movie was my first contact with "The Phantom". Before watching it, I only knew the story must be about a masked man and a beautiful girl, but I knew nothing more.
I have seen shows other movie versions, heard the music over and over and read the book since - but I have to say this movie still holds a special place in my heart since I first saw it at school (and I've seen it again since).
Charles Dance is a great phantom, his performance makes the character likeable and menacing at the same time. The story shows lots of differences to the book and paints an interesting picture of this talented but lonely man who is hiding under the opera house because of his deformed face. For me the story was very emotionally told, there were some funny scenes and a lot of touching ones, you slowly get some more information on the history of the phantom and you get to understand and even like him.
The main thing that drew me to this story and the film was then and is still the character of the phantom; all this pain, brilliance and love in just one heart and mind... it kept me thinking about this character long after watching the film. 10 years 8 months ago
