"LET'S DO THE TIME WARP AGAAAAIN!!"
Too often when I watch films I look for the meaning behind the story, the artistic vision of the writer and the social etc. commentary. But with some films, this one especially, it's best to just take it at face value and see it for what it is. When analyzed for commentary and artistic tone this film will seem shallow and satirical to no end- and indeed it is under this paradigm of thought. This film instead should be seen in the light of the things it did attempt to tribute and give us a humorous light on- crappy science fiction films and horror B flicks. It is campy, but not in a John Waters manner or Solondz or manner of any of the campy- style directors who's vision I hold in high esteem. It made fun of these old crappy flicks, not in an extremely hilarious way I might add, and that seemed to be it. It's almost as if the writer felt that the fact that there was a transsexual and some odd and weird scenes going on, wreaking havoc to the chaotic storyline was enough to give it the stamp of approval in the camp genre. Not so in my opinion. What I do think is that this film is overrated and only held together by an amazing and catchy musical score and Tim Curry's amazing performance. It is overrated, but still a good film when viewed in the right context. 3 out of 5 stars.
