   Great stuff. I was very pleasantly surprised. Seemed a bit obvious at the beginning but then it just god smarter and smarter. Very entertaining and yet an awesome performance by Charles Laughton. 13 years 11 months ago

   This is rather an atypical noir and a great one too. I would even call it a masterpiece. The depiction of being stuck in a toxic relationship is spot on and really makes you sympathize for the protagonist, even after the things he does. Of course, it's a pushing it a little bit far to suggest that every one of us would be able to do the things he does in the same situation, as the film does, but I think it's nonetheless a valuable and valid point to make and works as a means to make us think about it more deeply. I was afraid the ending would be a let down as it's very often the case with noirs, thanks to the censor policies of the time, but it's actually pretty great and fitting for the theme as well. 7 months 1 week ago
