The Witch is a horror film, sure, but I might also call it a historical drama that takes the superstitions of its era as real (it's based on actual "accounts" from 17th-Century New England). On a slow burn, the film's dialog takes getting used to, a sort of accented Elizabethan that sounds authentic, but isn't our normal vernacular. As the "folk tale" proceeds, a Calvinist family divorces itself from the village community to tame the wilderness on their farm, and fall afoul of the devil's curse. Is there a witch in the woods, or is one of them the culprit? Perhaps it's both, and the family members are quick to turn on one another when strange happenings start to occur. This is a film that uses imagery and sound to make its audience uneasy; the gore is minimal. Though it's a generally quiet film, with a gray color palette, it nevertheless kept things tense. So a recommendation from me, but perhaps not if you're in the mood for action or jump scares.Tiago Costa
And here I thought It Follows was the new standard for modern horror films.I couldn't tell you the last horror film I watched that genuinely made me afraid to go to sleep that night. Seriously, I got home from the movie and I had to change my shirt because it was drenched in sweat.
Quite possibly the most atmospheric horror film I've ever experienced.
The Witch has everything you could possibly want in a horror film. First and foremost its scary as hell. Its also full of tension and suspense. The slow burn nature of the film really gets to you. The score is amazing. Aside from being scary, the second most import thing for me when it comes to a horror film is the score. Sometimes the score alone can make or break a horror film. In The Witches case the score makes the film. And finally, the acting is top-notch. Anya Taylor-Joy was incredible as the lead. Even the young children were fantastic.
Robert Eggers is a first time filmmaker and he has made a masterpiece. What a time to be alive!
This film is nothing short of brilliant. I'll never look at a goat the same way.

I feel most of the best horrors inspire horror through sympathy with the victims, rather than directly trying to scare the audience. It does this by dramatising puritan fears of witches and the devil, and has them happen to a settler family trying to go it alone in the wilderness. The film has an oppressive and sinister feel to it, helped by cinematography that makes good use of candlelit interiors and bleak grey forests, and some excellent performances, including a breakthrough performance from Anya Taylor-Joy as the teenage daughter. It's not perfect: the characterisation isn't particularly interesting, and it has some dry stretches where not enough is happening, but the effective use of horror raises it above a lot of its peers.acoltismypassport

The attention to historical detail, well-constructed visuals, and tense editing really make this an immersive experience. Much more unnerving than outright scary, but this is easily the best horror movie I've seen in recent memory.I'm a huge fan of Robert Eggers' style, and I'm excited to see what he'll present next!
