Thor has the new Marvel makeover, and it's epic. Whilst I must admit that I think it falls due to a lack of consistency with the previous films, it's a fantastic performance from Hemsworth and the best one from Ruffalo to date. From the very first scene, I knew we were in for a corker; There's humour and there's kick to this movie. Hela is a typical but watchable villain, her all-black ensemble? not my personal taste, the family feud, however? I can get behind.

I think I've finally hit critical mass when it comes to Marvel movies, there are just too many characters, locales and storylines that it all seems like alphabet soup now. Ragnarok is a strange Marvel film in that it is supposed to be somewhat (serious?) and yet the insane amount of gags and jokes inserted into almost every line of dialogue is nauseating at times. It creates this unbalance of the viewer not being able to take it seriously even when major things are happening.

Cate Blanchett is ok, but Hela is a very one sided villain with virtually no development. Seems like there just wasn't time for any with all of Thor's misadventures. Dr. Strange seemed shoehorned in, there was no reason for him to be here except for added comedy and to fulfill the mid-credits bonus scene from Strange's movie.

Thor Ragnarok has some great jokes (and comedy cameos), amazing set pieces, and justifies my life-long love for the Hulk. It's also the best performance Chris Hemsworth has been allowed to give as Thor (both in terms of comedy and drama). But it's TOO funny for its own good. There are some important, epic and tragic things happening in this film, and in nearly every case, the punch to the gut I should have been feeling was undone by a great big joke slapped in front or in the middle of it. I could easily point to the second Guardians of the Galaxy for a film that gets that balance right. Similarly, the political satire many have been raving about, I feel is hidden under too much humor to register properly, the most indulgent of which comes from the character played by the director himself. Don't get me wrong, Ragnarok is hugely entertaining, but it ultimately lacks a stable emotional core.

The Thor movies have never been the MCU's best and Ragnarok is unlikely to change that reputation. While a very different movie to Thor and The Dark World with a space setting and a lighter more humerous tone that will please in the first hour or so it's that tone that's ultimately it's downfall in it's final act. It's there where the tone is all over the place. What should be dramatic moments to the viewer and traumatic events for Thor are completely ruined by the fact that the film doesn't seem to know when to stop joking around and just let the drama play out.

It has bad pacing problems, especially throughout the beginning, and a bland storyline and script that definitely feels like two disparate storylines smashed together; however, the movie shows promise when Taika Waititi's voice shines through, particularly in the scenes where he conceptualizes Hulk as an overgrown tantrumous child and the ones which include his own character (the most clear depictions of his style of comedy), Korg. Overall not bad, but underwhelming
