The various toys to weapons scenes are extremely creative. I must say I am enchanted by this propaganda melodrama, a strong outcry for anti-war and anti-invasion. I think Jia Zhangke must have been inspired by the director Sun Yu, whose Tian Ming (Daybreak) is another gem. Unlucky for Sun, he chose to stay in China after 1949.
