With this much misanthropy I need a lot more to balance it out than what Allen is giving me. Characters were, by and large, one-sided and unlikeable, all the stuff about new-age beliefs versus science felt hokey and overplayed. There were some funny moments, but probably my least favourite Woody Allen so far (I've not seen that many of his though) - 5.5/10

In a way this marks the perfection of Woody Allens style. The quirkiness is next to gone and what is left is a slice of life bleak comedy that gives some true comments regarding our society. It plays like a drama with humorous undertone, but it might just as well play as an horror film. Tragic, raw and bautiful. It's not his best, god knows he has done a lot of great work, but it's his most "pure". And such fabulous performances, particulary from Gemma Jones. Truly heart wrenching. In contrast to his last film, this is the perfect feel bad movie. 9/10

The stand off between the helpless yet convinced spiritualist (mother) against the furious and overpowering skeptic (daughter) is one of the most powerful moments I've seen in this new decade of cinema. Woody handles it with the sensitivity of someone that respects both ideologies instead of someone that is biased of one over the other. A true, curious explorer of the human condition.
