quote:
One may call "The other side of the nights" the first example of social realism in Turkish cinema. Influenced by American Film Noir, the film tells the story of a group of friends, trying to raise themselves from their poor working class background by robbing a gas station. The film blames unemployment and economic inequality for this. Erksan presents his themes (the despair of the working class, poverty, the dreams of the shanty town dwellers of going to America, love and friendship) passionately with in a fluent narrative. While owing a lot to Film Noir themes like despair and pessimism, "The other side of the nights" presents the toilings or the urban poor, on the brink of ruin, in a realistic way, while not neglecting the local particulars.

"The other side of the nights" is one of Erksan's less well known films. At the time of its release, most popular films were more or less Americanized and Erksan's film's political message didn't please. On top of it, it didn't have any star acting in it, one of Yeşilçam's peculiar casting choices. Kadir Savun, Suphi Kaner, Erol Taş and Hayati Hamzaoğlu, who are all better known as supporting character actors, took on main parts for this film. At the same time, this film is an important example of Erksan's masterful direction.

Ayna / Der Spiegel / The Mirror (1984), shot in Greece. as a co-production between Germany and Britain during Erden Kıral's years of self-exile in Germany, is based on Osman Şahin's psychological drama, Beyaz Öküz / The White Ox about woman and their repressed desires in patriarchal societies. The opening shots - the storm. the rain and t he long silences - set the tone of a dark story of desire and death. The precarious life of a peasant couple is disturbed when the omnipotent landlord’s whimsical brother (Hikmet Çelik) tries to seduce beautiful Zelihan (Nur Sürer) by throwing a flower into her pail. She throws the flower out with the water as if to cleanse her shame, but her face reflected in the mirror cannot hide the passion stirred. Her husband Necmettin (Suavi Eren) kills the man to restore his honour and they bury the corpse inside their home. Zelihan identifies the family ox with the dead man and begins to caress the animal.

Despite the theatricality of the dream sequences and the cow slaughter episode. the poetic drama created through the outstanding photography and the minimalist style in exposing the position of women as nonentities in a feudal system that devours the less advantaged brought the film several national and international awards.

"Hammer and Vibration" is an austere and depressing tale. You see the daily routine of the young boy Ahmet, working as apprentice in the car repair workshop, learning his trade and finally mastering the technique of beating the dents out of the tin. In the evening he comes home to his parents, living in poverty in a shed on top of a hill overlooking the poor districts of the city. His elder sister runs off with another man, later she returns home. The dictatorial father becomes bed-ridden. Flash forward: Ahmet has become a master in the workshop and now teaches apprentices himself. He is engaged to a young girl, but the fiancée abandons him after Ahmet doesn't turn up at a rendez-vous. His mental health deteriorates. (In the beginning of the film the lawyer-narrator explained the destructive effect of constant hammering on the brain.) In the final scene we see him walking in the prison yard, his right hand itching but tied to his belt so that he cannot execute the hammering movement. Abrupt ending, but I think we got all of the film.
