@armyofshadows - I think Jeunet's career was well on track before this (at least in the artsier part of the film industry), and Alien 4 seems like a dead-ended detour in that respect.
The problem is that we've seen most of this before, so the movie goes for laughs and weirdness instead - which doesn't pay off.
I usually enjoy Sayles' films a great deal. This isn't among his greatest, though. His political message is too much in-your-face, and the editing should have been more tight. Still, the acting is fine and the story is definitely one that's worth telling.
Charming but not sufficiently so to ignore the fact that the story lacks focus and that several of its elements (homophobia, racism) seem somewhat half-baked.
