Damned if I can figure out why this is one of the 1,000 greatest films ever. All this inflated drama attached to a crummy air-show race? Who cares? And "newspaper man" Rock pursues this story -- even after being fired? -- as if it's the scoop of the century? Whatever.
This movie is awful in more ways than can be counted. You can't find 10 seconds in this film that doesn't suck. Even Stevie Wonder's climactic song sucks. And boy, does this film hate the Beatles.
I can't fathom this world where men have no inhibitions about blatantly hitting on another man's wife, yet the tiniest gesture between the unmarried (sharing a cab, untying a bow tie) is grounds for divorce. Oh well, I liked the parts with rhyming dialogue and that scene where Jeanette McDonald was on the phone in her scanty slip was h-a-w-t.
Great direction, acting and music, and the story did not hook me in even the tiniest way. Eighty minutes of Barbara Stanwyck riding a horse would have entertained me as much. Feeling guilty about not enjoying it "enough."
This is one of those undercooked movies where I feel like the soundtrack composer is working grossly out of proportion to everyone else and giving the film an appearance of classy expertise that it doesn't really earn.
Lots of talk and not much story. That online version is seven minutes shorter than the displayed IMDb length, and it's obvious why. It runs too fast. Everyone speaks far too rapidly. Unfortunate.
This is a frustrating doc because it goes into deep detail about Fuller's journalism career and war service, but then just whisks through his film work in a snap. Also, Bill Duke's performance as a reader is sooooo over the top.
If I totalled up all the times I've heard the word "Bro" in a movie, I think 96% of them would be from this movie alone. Yikes. Did the screenwriters believe the film wouldn't have any teen appeal, otherwise? By the last hour, I and mate were bursting into laughter, every time the word was repeated yet again.
I basically enjoyed this film, but there were a lot of strange things about the story's structure.
The saga begins with Earthlings wanting to take over Pandora...but then as soon as Jake flees for wetter pastures, Pandora is forgotten and the enemy just pursues an all-consuming search for Jake and his family. Once the Jakesters are with the Reef People, the story is all about bonding with those fishbirds who serve as personal transport. But then suddenly the fishbirds don't matter anymore and it's all about the Tulkuns. Who apparently are spirit siblings to the Reef clan, except the Tulkuns haven't been around for ages until Jake's son bonds with one of them and changes everything. And then the villain switches from Quaritch to a couple of Kiwis and it just becomes Fight of the Conchords for about 45 minutes. And, out of the blue, there's the totally bizarre introduction of the detail that Tulkuns have a salad oil in their brains that gives eternal life. Except then this subplot is immediately dropped altogether! (If it doesn't re-appear in the upcoming sequels, that's seriously screwed up.) Then the villain switches back to Quaritch and the final act is easily the film's LEAST interesting part, where all the previous visual imagination is thrown out and it just becomes a second-rate, deja-vu action film with two gangs trying to seize control of a large ship. Zzzz.
This won't make the film any funnier, but I suggest watching the YouTube clip at 0.75 speed. It's just too damn fast, as is. And since the listed time is eight minutes rather than six minutes....
