As Mrsnoops said, Svengali was much better than feared. Especially good performances from lovely miss Marsh and Barrymore. Caligari meets Phantom of the Opera or something.
Pure magic. You know it's a good one when you start it again from the beginning after it finished. First time I bothered to listen to the commentator-track too, which was quite interesting.
Only good thing about this one was Angie Dickinson. Just reminds you that western movies are mostly crap, except for your Leones and Peckinpahs of course..
Almost four hours of documentary footage about rice growing, charcoal burning and bugle blowing, you should know what it is before attempting to see this one.
I was a bit sceptical to watch this three hour long noir at first, but got convinced quite early on. Good story, good actors, an experimental score by Tomita Isao and the eerieness of Tohoku all made this a very pleasant surprise. Uchida Tomu, you now have a new fan.
Hanspeter, the swiss guy, was a really disagreable type. Always yelling at his wife who was always nice to him, at odds with the village people, building a castle with money from his father walking around completely stoned hunting with a rifle against the law and ahimsa principle. And then he complains about how the techno-kids give indians a bad image of white people!
It's hard to imagine Wakamatsu did some influential work in the 60's and 70's if you watch this. The acting is on par with bad tv-drama and the story gives no surprises either.
Surprisingly weak for a Egoyan movie. The movie in the movie is a one-sided mess of rape and murder, the border official scenes were not credible, some otherwise good actors didn't do a good job here. I hope there are some better movies on the genocide than this one, and that Egoyan can make brilliant movies like The Sweet Hereafter, Calendar and Felicia's Journey again. Now is the time to see Exotica to regain my good impression of him.
Shane wrote, directed, produced, edited, made music for and starred in this one. Something tells me he should have had someone else there too to give him a second opinion.
Even if it's filmed with an iphone 4 and only lasting for 30 minutes, this went surprisingly deep into korean folklore. Another gem from Park Chan-wook.
To everyone complaining this is a "terrible adaptation": It is still a great movie. And to be honest I felt it to be very much in the spirit of the book. Read the book first and watch this one second.
