An ambiguous young-woman-with-sexual-inhibitions-marital-drama-with-horror-undertones, which apparently is a very specific sub-genre quite popular in the late sixties and early seventies. The similarities with Altman's Images (released the same year) are frankly surprinsing.
I liked the fact that the supernatural is never firmly proven, if anything because it allows the last few seconds of the movie to descend into delightful WTF territory.
I'm genuinely confused by the negative comments. I found the girls' perfomances to be chilling and convincing -- this is a movie about their relationship and nothing else. The adults aren't important (most of the time their faces aren't even shown), their acting is then irrelevant. And the powerplay in that dynamic duo is thrilling thanks to a fan-fucking-tastic script.
It takes guts to end your movie with a joyous glorification of child murder
.
Don't be mislead -- this is not a supernatural drama. It's a pretty much straighforward unraveling of a simple premise: A mischievous little girl convinces her friend she's a witch and starts bossing her around.
Putting aside the terribly aged special effects, the bold mix of genres works seemlessly and makes for a compelling - and unintentionally funny - lab coat gothic thriller.
I feel this short gets too much of a bad wrap. True, it is dizzying to say the least, altough no more than any Brakhage imo. It is not too long, and the faces and voices rapidly passing through greys and oranges create some sense of disturbing, Apocalypse Now-esque ambiance.

Better than I anticipated, as it often is with Carpenter. Also, fair warning: it's a comedy, don't expect the usual thrills.Movie comment on La novia ensangrentada
