Better than I expected. Close to Tsai Ming-liang work in style and theme, so much that it feels like a Tsai film at times (pretty obvious since Lee has been working with him for so long and they became really close), but still not a copy of his and somehow get his personal style.
For those who enjoy Tsai films this might be an interesting one to look at.
Modern life as a life of alienation, loneliness, and... watermelons?
A much more deeper film that it can appear at first sight, just as Tsai usually does. Besides, it was really funny at times, especially the musical scenes.
Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-liang has been a great discovery on conterporany asian cinema for me. If you are a fan of over long takes, slow and motionless shots, lack of dialogues and colourful photography, with themes such as alienation, discomfort, absurdity, sadness, loneliness and things like that Tsai is your thing.
"The structure of the film is based on that of the novel, which borrows, as its title suggests, from tango. That is, the film is broken into twelve parts, and does not necessarily move chronologically, as it follows the tango scheme of going six moves forward, then six back (hence 6 + 6 parts in total)."
First of all, I would like to mention that it took me several days to watch it because, ungratefully, I can't concentrate that much and I have a tendency to swift off. Well, I must admit it is not an easy one: it runs for more than 7 hours, there are only 150 shots, several parallel story-lines around different characters, the long takes (a very representative Tarr's trait) may be too long and arguably very slow. Unfocussed maybe and not very clear. As the camera moves that way, one may regard the film as motionless and boring. However, it is precisely that filming technique what make it powerful, a masterpiece.
On the first hand, what appealed the most to me was Tarr's ability to create such a gloomy, melancholic, burden-like atmosphere. I loved the music and the black-and-white photography. Oh, that cinematography... that was something beautiful. His work has been compared to Andrei Tarkovsky's and I understand why.
Some part are really brilliant. The best for me was "Comes Unstitched". I couldn't take my eyes away from the screen for a single moment. Yet the saddest one, but also the most beautiful somehow. The rest are really fine as well. But what remains and what it make this transcendent is the whole, the message, the simplicity of the story, the realism, the crudity, the tough side of earthy daily life. The metaphysical aspect regarding modern life.
The child decides to fade away,
something that is not very hard to understand for some people there, what to live for and why. The sense of uncertainty and unconformity, human beings unable to live a better life. Lack of amusement, inability to choose for own actions, impotence. There's not really much you can do.
If I am to rare this film I will give it 5 stars out of five. It is worthy. I got to love Béla's work with this watching. To finish with I just will add this quotation which I found very touching: "She felt peaceful inside and the trees, the road, the rain and the night all radiated peace."
I loved the music, the atmosphere and the scenery. Simple but solid, moving story. Besides, Tony Leung's performance was brilliant from my point of view. Provided that you like drama packed history worth the watch.
The way I see it, all Haneke early works seem quite 'boring' at first, but you just have to be a little bit patient because either this one or other Haneke films get rather interesting all of a sudden. Precisely for that reason it goes from 'nothing happens at all' to all the opposite. Maybe it hasn't got much action, but still great. I see Haneke's films as psychological studies of people's behaviour in modern societies, not as films in which there is a lot of action going on. Therefore, if people get bored watching this film they should just watch something different instead, but still unfair and illogical of people classifying these kind of films, being The Seventh Continent or Caché or even Funny Games as 'boring'. What is more, since most Haneke's are quite disturbing and deal with real modern life issues I think it wouldn't be that bad whether people took these movies more seriously instead of watching them only as entertainment. Some movies just are not made for people to enjoy them.
This is just my point of view once more.
All positive comments and most favorite top list? Well, I don't quite understand. As most of people flatter this movie, I had great expectations on it, which vanished quickly. Case you like the steotypical stories about American ordinary life, you will love this. For the same reason, I didn't like it. I expected something bigger, but for me this was mediocre, and I didn't enjoy it at all. I found it predictable and conventional, nothing new (even have to say that I almost fall asleep). Though the first part of the story wasn't bad, when the boy's about 12 the film had not interest for me. I'm not saying this is a bad movie (obviously, I lack criterion to judge properly) but from my point of view the plot was slighly boring, because of the charachers mainly, which didn't work for me.
This is simply the way I see it. I tried so hard to enjoy this, but I just couldn't.
Awful, just as the rest of all these kind of movies. Please avoid watching this if you have the chance. Anyway, it was good to see Matthew Mcconaughey and Bradley Cooper together, thankfully they decided to make good cinema.
Do not know why so many bad reviews. I have to say that I really liked it. It was pretty acceptable to me, much better than I expected. Mads Mikkelsen was so detestable, but cannot hate him any way. I fell in love with the cinematography and visual style of the movie.
