It's like every character was a secret agent desperately trying to get the other person to say the second part of their code phrase.
The Mole: "What do you want to be when you grow up?"
The Boy: "Kind."
The Mole: (shit, that's not right) "Nothing beats kindness." (um what was the second bit, oh yes) "It sits quietly beyond all things"
The Boy: ...
The Mole: "All. Things? Quietly?" (come on dude, you're the only boy here and I can't give you the microfilm until you say the damn code word!!)
Exquisite execution. It really breathes in the beginning, getting you comfortable with the found footage format, making it feel like real life. Then, when it has you nestled comfortably in safe hands, it grabs you and squeezes, tighter and tighter, taking that breath away. Simple, elegant and genuinely scary. Absolutely essential viewing for any horror fan.
We are always changing. Every tiny piece of us lives and dies and lives again, endlessly replicating and replacing itself, never perfectly, always slightly different. When we die, our parts become different things, atoms and energy absorbed and dispersed into the world around us. We think that we are a single thing, a cohesive whole, but each of us is a biological Ship of Theseus on a journey to annihilation. And those that remain grieve the ones who are gone, and grieve the versions of ourselves that only exist in memory.
Rebecca and Renfield murder a bar full of gangsters. While escaping with Renfield, she then murders some cops.
Rebecca: You disgust me Renfield, because you're a murderer.
It's a fun space romp! But first, here's a lot of animal cruelty. We'll get to the romp in a second, just got to cut back to a bit of torturing and incinerating adorable animals. Okay back to the hijinks and one liners and
yes we shot your best friend and all your best friends are dead and they were adorable and innocent and we murdered them and showed you their bleeding corpses.
Excellent allegory for the demonizing of marginalized people and how that fear is weaponized to harm everyone in the name of keeping them safe from the "monster". Also there's an awesome shark dance. METAL!
A great zombie film spoiled a bit by the 3rd act exposition dump. Would have loved a more subtle take without the overt "this is what is happening here" speech, because what is happening here is a lot less interesting than having no idea what is happening here.
@the_queen_noob "it’s really jarring how Bond disrespects her just because she’s a woman".
Wow. James Bond is probably the most famously misogynist movie character of the 20th century. Yeah, Bond was pretty cool with powerful Pussy Galore until he (checks notes) raped her.
Execs in charge of the recent MCU live action films must be sweating. This movie is gorgeous, funny, creative and sincere and shines a giant light on how much the MCU has been phoning it in lately. Phase whatever, don't care, inject more Spider-Punk into my eyeballs please.
This film is part of transgender history. It was made a few years after the notoriety of Christine Jorgensen becoming famous for her reassignment surgery in Denmark. That's why Ed Wood goes out of his way to differentiate his "heterosexual" crossdressing in such explicit exposition.
Somewhere in heaven, Richard Maibaum and Tom Mankiewicz are drinking Martinis explaining to their friends how they made one of James Bond's easily escapable exotic death scenarios "laying pipe".
In a weird way this reminded me a lot of anime. Interesting world, so many characters that I can't name but that doesn't matter, one dimensional villains and a plot that has a lot of filler but was still engaging and could potentially go on forever.
The Menu:
Excellent Pacing with Artisanal Timed Reveals.
Clever hand-written Dialogue infused with deconstructed Broad Social Commentary.
Healthy dash of Hong Chau being a passive aggressive badass.
Seasonings of Comeuppance and Delightful Details.
Served Well Done.
Great concept, great execution. It feels like a William Gibson novel grounded in the real world, and holds up very well in 2023. Did it have to be so rapey?
