I think MOST people choose movies based on the actors, genre or plot (theyre usually interested in those factors) or its based on a recommendation from a friend. "You should rent....cuz its great!" Then theres film geeks who choose movies based on certain directors.

bal3x: I dont have any offhand, all I meant is that there are plenty of films on the original lists I simply didnt like. Not saying they werent well made but they dont appeal to me, or I find them boring/pretentious etc.

The funny thing is, the movies people seem to look downon (such as B movies) on are often really entertaining and fun to watch. So you tell me what matters when you watch a movie: The fact its gotten critical praise by some people who write reviews, the social relevance or the fact its just an enjoyable film. Thats up to you decide.

Yes, I'm using this database to keep a log of all the movies I've watched. And I like it that I can also check the movies that are not in another list. Meaning, why should I have the same taste for movies as someone who thinks he knows all about movies, because he has watched a lot of 'em.
Thank you for this new feature.

As some people seem to forget why this feature is added

Quote from the blog "why is it taking so long":

To infinity and beyond

iCheckMovies 2.0 was initially going to be version 1.0+: a bunch of new features and an enlargement of our movie database. Along the way we decided to do something much better.

We decided to optimize the hell out of our code, to make the website a lot faster, user friendly and easier to update. We improved upon the layout, changed the URL structure and built a unified system of displaying data. We added lots of features, which basically will transfer the power from us to you, the user.

No more asking us to add a list, since you will able to do that yourself. No more missing movies, since you will be able to add anything that is available on IMDB.com. You can even decide to join or create a group to celebrate your love for a genre, actor, movie or director.

The new website will be a joy to use, trust us.

And the guys from iCM said already that they're working on differentiating between movies & films and making changes to the search as well. Have some patience and read the previous 21 pages here :)

It doesn't make any baring on the competitive part of the site but it makes a huge difference in the time spent improving the site. we could have yearly AFI lists and maybe proper forums if time wasn't spent on these pointless features. As the site moves into a period in which profits need to be realized, preventing feature creep is important.

the showgirls vs savages problem is fun because showgirls is on two lists one is for AV Club's Cult Favorites, which is understandable and has a nice write up about each film and why they included it and the other is a list from some forum with any framing device to understand why they chose that film. What type of list is more helpful for the end user and what type of list would you want to see more of? It's not always about what film were chosen but why people chose them. That's why its fun to go through some of these lists and see and able to read why people are in love with Irma Vep and the watch Judex.

Let's not make this an argument about elitism.

I personally don't care if the lists have canon films or not. I just don't want user created lists.

that is what i'm afraid of, and since it obviously exists already why create it again.

but i mean it seems like they've already started this route anyway with:

I agree with PeteGCDB. And another thing is that it does not hurt that ICM has a large database. It's not like you need to see all of them for that matter. If you follow a list like "Moviesense" or "IMDB top 250" than you do it anyway.

Taste is something that is also important. Some people like mainstream movies and other like to see exploitation. This site should have the opportunity to satisfied them all.

"Cluttered with alot of bad movies". Lets break that statement down, cuz thats such a broad term to use. Is that everything thats not on a top list then? My question is how exactly do you determine whats bad and whats good? Shouldn't you just watch every film and judge it on its own merit? Thats the common sense approach. You dont disregard 1000s of films because Roger Ebert didnt put it on his Top 100.

Hiding movies from people: Thats an interesting idea. So critics are now allowed to judge what films should be seen and all others should be hidden from the public because of their ugliness?

In my opinion, people should really use their own minds with film. Its one thing if you're totally new to it and don't know where to begin. The top lists are great to use as a guide. But I think alot of people on this site simply love movies and don't judge them in a black and white manner. I think we need to let the team of ICM broaden the horizons of the sites concept and NOT think inside a box.

I'm a little bit with all of you. I use this site primarily as a resource to find great films but i see no need to keep it "elitist". As we will soon be able to add any list that we want and the fact that you can remove any list you don't care for I don't see any problems.

This site will soon be better than ever : )

@ Marijn and @ Erik - I see you guys are working on it, and that quite a lot of titles have been restored. Thanks so much!

Would it help you at all to have a list of some others that still aren't back?

for example, for ME "The good the bad and the weird" is on my top 20 of all time. Not my fault that a few others think like that... =)

The only thing i disagree is Tv Shows, but in my opinion they forgot that people also rate series in iMDB and when we "import", this website doesn't know the difference and doesn't filter it. I´m sure they will work on that =)

Exhibit A:

icheckmovies: how many movies have YOU seen?

(you'll note nothing in the title mentions anything about movies only on Top lists by critics and the Academy etc)

The defense rests.

@minlshaw it it's the three step in the tour, the point is to check movies on lists and compare to other members of the site.

http://www.icheckmovies.com/help/tour/

anyway the check any movie is a bad thing because it diverts resources away from the list making and updating and most importantly vetting what lists go up. it also takes away resources away from developing the social aspect of the site - and increases reliance on some facebook group instead of developing a forum in which we can actually talk about the films. it's hard to even want to leave comments on films because i'll never know if someone will read and respond to it. those are more important to the health of the site. there are plenty of sites you can check off whatever movies you want and make whatever lists you want. why did this need to change into one of those sites?
