The Icelandic Film and Television Academy (IKSA) was founded in 1999 and gave its first awards ("Eddan" or the "Edda Award") the same year. The awards ceremony is broadcast live each year and has always maintained huge ratings (usually well over 60% of the entire population watches the show).
