While I can see the points being made by @satisfythecrave, and one could point out the gimmick removes the audience from the story completely but I really enjoyed this film. There are plenty of movie references to give all the pretentious movie goers pats on the back in recognition for being oh so clever (Jaws, Matrix, Dark Knight...etc.)

Consistently reminding the audience that it was a true story by bringing it back to the real guys was a bold move. I, Tonya was told in a similar fashion but Margot and Sebastian played the interviewed versions as well. In a modern progression of filmmaking, this film pays off for the audience if you commit to the fun

Have heard many mixed things, but i loved it. The mixed live action/documentary worked really well for me and made it much more involving than a random true crime bio or a stale netflix style adaptation. thumbs up.

Either a documentary or narrative film would have served the story well, but making it a hybrid took it up a notch. The interview inserts kept it real and the changing of details from how different people remembered them added a light touch. Good use of humor.

I especially liked the epilogue, and how Audubon's Birds had a recurring role throughout the film.

Well made, super fun to watch, and had a few interesting small points to make from the point of view of the real people, but the overall takeaway was not rife with major points about life. Nonetheless, it's a fun romp and the real-life people mixed in worked really really well.

Based on an actual botched heist that took place in 2004, American Animals seemingly takes its cue from the fact the participants can't all agree on what actually happened to craft a hybrid between actual documentary and well-acted docu-drama, sometimes playing with that idea by using camera tricks to alter reality or introducing the real people into the narrative briefly interacting with their actor selves. Heist movies are innately entertaining. Botched heists (fiascos) are too. But this elevates the material to make more of a meal of the rather mundane circumstances. Ultimately though, it's about facing up to your mistakes and the regret that follows, which traditional narratives rarely do. These college students were ill-equipped to carry off this daring crime, not just materially, but morally. If this were a fiction, I'd call it an exaggeration of that time in your life when you take jokes too far, dare to dream and plan and not think about the consequences. It's real, but the description still sticks. More true stories/biopics need to be at least this clever.

Either commit to a fictionalized retelling of asshole white boys that's actually interesting or make it an A&E biography piece sympathizing them. You can't have both. This film tries too hard to tell what could be a compelling story about toxic masculinity and bonehead stupidity of youth without any deeper context. The filmmakers force you to forgive the stupid assholes for being heinous assholes...how pathetic. Take fucking responsibility for your story. You can have movies about asshole white boys that are actually compelling (The Social Network, for example).
