i liked it a lot. man who objectifies women due to porn addiction and woman with unrealistic expectations on men due to hollywood portrayal of how love works. should be a wake up call for many.
A sly comedy about gender objectification that deals with deep issues in a general way. As such, it never quite skewers the targets it reaches for, but that's perhaps the point. Many of the characters are simply presented as being foils for a particular point of view, though the acting is very good throughout. Levitt doesn't cast judgement through the camera eye about who's right or wrong, but instead puts up a mirror to the audience, posing deep questions about what or whom we choose to believe when forming our identity, what we demand of others to seek fulfillment in a furiously changing world, and why, old questions that my generation needs to hear presented in this fashion. The very last line in particular is something to reflect upon - the lesson being that if you're lost amidst a sea of opinions, it's best to be lost with someone you can stand to be around.
In terms of pure narrative, it's quite plain and unremarkable, yet nonetheless, it's a good debut with a confident sense of style. Recommended.
Why are there comments about too much porn content? If you're prudish about sexual content don't watch a film with a protagonist who watches porn. Besides, at no point do you see any penis or vagina. You can see breasts but then you can see breasts on National Geographic or every other Angelina Jolie movie.
Pretty solid directorial debut. Takes on a pretty tough subject matter and handles it in a mature way. Aspires to but never touches greatness, but definitely worth the cost of admission.
The whole getting with Julian Moore thing at the end is quite weird but, all in all the film is very enjoyable and addresses an issue that is widely common these days due to the ideas and beliefs forced on us by the media example: Hollywood movies of course which almost everyone is a sucker for. Josepth Gordon Levitt was phenomenal; He's definitely an actor who's always striving to change skins, I know for a fact that he will go places with such a remarkable talent like his.
What I also really admire about this film is the confusion between whether it belongs to the art house cinema or should be considered commercial and mainstream.
Continued my cinematic conversation about identity and intimacy with Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Don Jon, a comedy-romance full of truth about male/female expectations. It's deftly done, funny and true to life. JGL plays the title character, one of those Ginos who expects women to be like those in porn. His world view is shaken when he falls for Scarlett Johansson's character, who expects men to behave as if they were in romantic movies. Neither is healthy, but they're the fantasies media sells us as realities, and Johnny must find a new truth if he's to become happy. And maybe Julianne Moore's older, wiser woman (but don't call her lady, we learned that from Magnolia!) might just have the answers he's seeking. JGL has fun with playing against type, and as a director too. I like how his world is presented in fast, modern cuts until he falls in love and it turns into sweeping dollies. Each of the three acts has its own look, in keeping with his evolving and maturing relationships. I hope JGL has other films in him!
I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I like the portrayl of both men and women being influenced by media in their relationships. The ending was cute, I could of gone without the epilogue, but it didn't undo the rest of the film. Overall it was nice. 5/10
charming, excellently directed, hilarious and quite real. made me really uncomfortable at times and it definitely wasn't because of the porn. a relatable character who comes out of his douchiness to find happiness.
A great first film from Gordon-Levitt. Its funny and really stands out in a done-to-death genre. The main character is also a joy to watch for his originality as well as charisma. The ending is a little disappointing for my taste but still a good film.
8/10
I liked the way it dealt with complex issues, as well as noting Joseph trying on his Director's hat. Of course, it's hard to find time to add depth to Julianne's character, but it all rang true. The main character goes to confession a lot, but it's only with Julianne's character that he makes meaningful confessions despite himself.

New life goal: write a script, direct the movie and cast Scarlett Johansson as my slutty girlfriend.4/5

A little didactic, but I agree with the message, and the acting is great.Emiam
6/10Confident, daring, takes up something that is more common than many would like to believe.
