I'm always up for a hockey movie despite not being a sports fan, and Goon surprised me with its earnestness, relating to both the character and the portrayal of hockey. The teams may be inventions, and the names may have been changed, but Goon is based on the life story of a real person, and makes a fine tribute to a position that gets little recognition despite serving a role that helped make hockey as popular as it is, whether can defend the game's violence or not. Writer/co-star Jay Baruchel and director Michael Dowse have made a very Canadian movie - and one mostly taking place in the Atlantic Provinces, for which I am especially grateful - with our accents, our concerns, our towns, and our music, packaged for a wider audience thanks to stars Seann Michael Scott (his best film ever?) and Liev Schreiber. Sweet in spite of the violence, it's a fun (and funny!) little film.
This was the first time I saw Sean William Scott in a film where I didn't see him as "Stifler" from American Pie, which is a good thing. He's growing as an actor. I think he's really coming into his own now. And I love this movie... it's funny, it's got heart... I think I've seen it about five or six times now. Love it.
Hockey Fan or not, the heart and spirit of this film makes it a definite own. A perfect amount of blood and grit that'll have you and your friends cheering, gasping, and Pounding back a few cold ones :D If your not a total pussy then I sugest watch'n
I think that It´s the first time that I saw Sean Willian Scott in a role that it´s not the funniest guy in the movie. I like his performance, good acting by him.
Really good movie, a sport movie with comedy and with violence, Burachel and Golberg did a good job in the writting and the suporting cast is solid with Jay Baruchel, Alison Pill, Liev Schreiber, Marc-André Grondin and Kim Coates.
4.25/5
I know it is what it is and perhaps I shouldn't have gone to see such a film but how can I enjoy a film that glorifies mindless thuggery in such a way? Sure it's supposedly all consensual fights between adults but still... there really isn't much to this other than that. Sure it makes attempts to say have courage and stand up for what's right but it really is just a load of fighting.
