Olivier was criticized for cutting the play by almost half, but this is the best of the filmed versions. Although he was a little too old, he played the part well.
6+/10
I saw this as the last film and find it out of step in our time. It was certainly fantastic when it came out, but both Mel Gibson's and Kenneth Branagh's (longest and faithful original play meticulously - the first to do, hence 4 hours long) versions are clearly better. On 10 official charts (!).

Absolutely spectacular. The choreography for the sword fight was incredibly intense- even more so if you consider the era in which this was made. Now I'm off to see Burton's version.

Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet (1996) which contains every word runs to four hours.
And the 1938/9 Broadway season's first uncut Hamlet, ran for four and a half hours.
More here.

Laurence Olivier's version has a lot of technical originality for the time, but remains rather stagey, and his own performance lacks energy.Torgo
The ghost's voice sounded truly eerie.boulderman
Should it have beaten Treasure of the Sierra Madre though?ClassicLady
A little too much for me. I guess my tastes are not that sophisticated yet. Still, I love his acting and his voice just can't be beat.Suzanne
A little "too much" for me.Good, though..
