I've read somewhere that this is the most expensive chinese film of all time...and it shows.
The costumes, scenery, the colors, the backdrops of the emperor's palace where 90% of the story takes place are breathtaking and can make the film worthwile alone.
The story itself is a shakespearean drama which for western audiences might be harder to grasp and appreciate than that of Zhang Yimou's previous "Hero" (me included)
Still, an interesting watch 6 years 2 months ago
The operatic spectacle is beautiful. 6 years 11 months ago
Zhang Yimou's Curse of the Golden Flower. A very heavy tragedy that's not at all the non-stop action film its trailer promised. So a more quiet evening than we thought, but strong performances, incredible set design and cool flying ninjas made up for it. The lesson is that while yes, Tang Dynasty China was corrupt, at least there wasn't any unemployment. 1 year 8 months ago
