My advice, read all the negative comments you can. Then go see it, it Will be better than you expect.

I thought this was a very fun film. Nice action and cool characters. Had some stuff for the hardcore fans, but also could easily be enjoyed by newbies to Star Wars.

A lot better than I expected. Rogue One played it too safe, and Last Jedi tried too hard to be different. This one struck a nice balance. This is a character driven story with relatively low stakes, and for the first time in any Star Wars movie, it feels like the omnipresent constraint of The Hero's Journey isn't there. Han is presented as a liar and a cheat and a scoundrel, and, no spoilers, he messes up quite a bit, and we get to see him learn the trade along the way. Most of the points you expect to be there are there: spoiler, but they're done in just a creative enough way as to be interesting. The few new characters are intriguing and the action scenes are quite effective. I, like many fans, went in expecting a disaster. Instead, we got a film that, in my opinion, is superior to both Rogue One and Last Jedi.

Rogue One had the ability to push the gauntlet because it knew what it was. Solo doesn't really have that same freedom, and it feels like it was played safe rather than diving in head first. I get the feeling that Disney was rather gun-shy after what Last Jedi turned out to be (and rightfully so.)

We finally get to see Corellia on the big screen, but it feels lackluster and that somehow leaks into the entire film. spoiler Alden does a decent job of portraying Han, but I think Donald Glover did a better than average job with Lando. He really shines. I think that Glover's preparation of watching Billy Dee Williams' performance comes through, there are tiny little nuances that just help paint the younger version of the character.

Droid equal rights? That's something we really didn't need in this film in any way. Possibly funny at first, it gets to be quite tiresome after that agenda is pushed over and over. spoiler

I have mixed feelings about the cameo at the end. It almost felt like it was shoehorned into the film as if they believed it would automatically make the film better. You can almost picture the writing staff sitting around and thinking "we've got a decent movie, but we need a major pop at the end" and then someone chimed in "I know, let's throw him into it." It seemed way out of left field and let's be honest, is nowhere near as seamless as the epic cameo battle at the end of Rogue One, for example.

I ended up really liking this one. I love how dirty and grimy everything looks throughout the entire film.

Surprisingly good.
I didn't expect liking the cameo at the end as much as I did.

Having just watched it I think I liked it more than TLJ.

As an origin story, Solo works a bit too hard to weave in everything a prequel MIGHT have used from Han's backstory and improbably features almost EVERYTHING is the span of a single adventure. Well, they were never gonna make a hundred of these, I don't really mind, and there's still room to grow his disillusionment in a possible sequel. Fact is, this is a perfectly acceptable space cowboys movie, with lots of action, a heist element (but sadly not all in on the tropes), and not without its insight into Solo's character (compare Leia, Rey and Qu'ra, for example). Alden Ehrenreich is likewise fine in the role, but it's Donald Glover channeling Billy Dee Williams as Lando that's truly great. That voice! My only real gripe is the lighting, which is mostly dingy and hazy, the faces in gray shadow practically at all times. All other flaws - structure, dialog, continuity implants - are those I'm used to with Star Wars films in general, and get a pass. Bottom line: Would I watch a sequel? Yes. Does this make me want to revisit the other movies with this context in mind? Sure.

Not bad, not great….very forgetable SW spin off with lesser results than Rogue one despite a fine cast. Also the movie is very DARK, you hardly see anything. Too bad

Honestly, not as disappointing as expected. I had otherwise decided to boycott this 'Star Wars' movie because I feared it would destroy my picture of the young Han. However, I did not find it as horrible as people said since it's release. Despite a difficult production with many problems, the result is satisfactory. Ron Howard to the rescue!

Ron Howard with father & son Kasdans have delivered a true gem. It's got a fine balance between grittiness and fun Ă¡ la Empire Strikes Back. None of the movies since Return of the Jedi has that vibe as successful as this one. Acting, writing, characters, set pieces, production are all spot on; backstory elements are intelligently woven - except a cameo at the end. Glad that Harrison Ford is thrilled with the result unlike Mark Hamill with the Last Jedi. Hope time will favor its status.

Really good! This is what happens when you entrust the job to the good guy. Ron was made for it!

Half of the movie buys into Han's original characterization, and explains how he got to his nihilistic state at the beginning of the original trilogy. The other half is apologist, enough said to avoid spoilers. I enjoyed the action set pieces, some of which are truly innovative. Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson are great. The lead and Donald Glover are enjoyable, and I liked it as an individual adventure movie, which is how the "Star Wars Story" films should be evaluated, imo. Some nods to the originals were fun, some were lame. Had fun, 3.5/5

To this date I've eagerly taken note of every piece of the Star Wars universe. The trilogy, deleted scenes, Ewok drama, Droid cartoons, even the Holiday Special. I never dared to even dream of an annual Star Wars film. But then I saw Solo and found it so unnecessary. This prequel is a by-the-numbers entry in the franchise. We can already worry about franchise fatigue.
