at the time it was made such movies weren't very common yet. now, however, i cannot help but sneer at the plot, which makes sense, of course, but has gaping holes and just generally tries too hard to keep the intrigue instead of focusing on keeping characters realistic and round. still a brilliant piece for its time.
The dialogue is horrible, the setting ridiculous, the characters impossible to relate to, including the unnamed Alice whom you can recognize from a certain video game.
Overall 10/10. The movie reveals perhaps unparalleled, archetypal naivete that reaches a cosmic scale and leaves an imprint on your life - you will never be the same once you realize that on the part on the director this was a Herculean labor with the intention of creating a Form that reveals all of the characteristics of the often unappreciated world of Japanese spaghetti ingenue-meets-world plots. It's a journey that takes you from the fringes of geeky video games to the worst traditions of Hollywood, whilst somehow molding the two into Ideas that harness real life, a feat the greats could only dream about.
Raises perfectly good questions about identity, belonging and inspiration. I don't see how this can get a Metascore of 55. Well if you don't mind the actors too much.
@Jook I'm sure your opinion is grounded, but how exactly was Persepolis pretentious? :O Sure, artsy moments like color switching, etc., but it all served a purpose, which is the exact opposite of pretentiousness.
A politically-charged tearjerker that gets to the bottom of things -- including the role of women in even more patriarchal societies than ours. It's a shame that they don't make more movies like this.

the trollface is right.the six books are golden. the film, on the other hand, is like a miscalculated try of expressing the inexpressible through film. which failed.
