very good monster movie. everything dombrewer said was right on the money, so i wont repeat him. also, lay off crinderman, hes allowed to hate movies if he wants to
i know it was made in 1942, but the wolf looked like shit. also, why did bela in wolf form look like and actual wolf, whereas lon cheney in wolf form looked like a man in a wolf mask.
this movie had all the suspense in the world then no climax. i was hoping to see something visual near the end, but nope. but, overall, not bad for one of the original haunted house movies.
night of the living dead started the idea of zomies taking over, dawn of the dead expanded on the idea of a widespread takeover, day of the dead expanded on the effect it would have on people, and land of the dead focused on the zombies themselves. dawn of the dead had this queer upbeat feel about it, as beefen said.
predecessor of halloween by 4 years, this movie is an excellent example of an early slasher film. this is where the genre began to take shape, with its POV shots and and the idea of a group of people being killed one by one. this movie suprised me with its violence and dark feel. a great movie, but i dont know if it should be this high on the list.
this movie is awesome. it is one of the best sci-fi movies of all time, and set the tone for the second best sci-fi sequel of all time (beaten by the terminator). it creates an atmosphere of suspense, helped along by the kick ass musical score. well worthy of being in the top 10 horror movies of all time
this movie made the slasher genre. psycho invented it, but halloween perfected it and brought it into the mainstream. horror movie trying to emulate halloweens style continued to get made through the 80s into the early 90s, and it had a huge impact on the horror genre in general. a great film and worthy of being higher on the list. above re-animator anyway.
i think of this movie as the modern frankenstein. this was not meant to be taken seriously, like george romeros works. this was an interesting spin on the zombie genre infused with comedy. this one stands out from the others, and i prefer it to movies such as the return of the living dead. however, i think that the definitive zombie comedy is shawn of the dead.
jackson butchered this movie in his remake. like most people my age, i saw the remake first. now, watching the original, i can see how it went downhill. the kong in the remake doesnt have the character of the original, and the entire remake is based around action scenes and the people fighting against the monsters. one thing the remake did get right is all the scenes with the natives. think about it, if you were black, and some white guys came to your island uninvited and started filming you and insulting your god, you wouldnt want to talk, you would want to fight. in the original, why dont we see the sailors fighting the natives. it would have been much more interesting than the longwinded part where the natives try to negotiate swapping women.
this genuinely scared me. the first three quarters of the movie are ok, but at first i was doubtful this was a horror movie at all. then, in the course of about 20 minutes, we see the gym teacher get crushed to death, cars getting blown up, people getting burned alive, and carries mum impaled by kitchen knives. wow.
the most gory movie of that time, with the possible exception of dead alive. the card scene is my favourite. the first time i saw this movie, i was nine, and my older cousin decided scare the bejesus out of me by making me watch it. i thought it was nothing special until the card part (i couldent understand the idea of tree rape).
i actually preferred dracula to frankenstein, which came out the same year. i agree this movie is unintentionally hillarious, but i think it makes it more watchable.
