Watched the director's cut and while I had no expectations, can't say I was impressed. Act 1 felt like a TV pilot. Act 2 was interesting but spoiled by Act 3's flip from silly to lackluster ending. Interestingly, the only POC was the maid? But hey, at least they didn't normalize bestiality like in the prior film. Honestly, if I'd missed this one, it wouldn't have mattered. While LPS had a freshness, this one felt much more stale, more Hollywood, with it's stars and being shot in color.
Wonder what would happen if one alternates between saying, "Candyman", "I want to go to the World's Fair", the required number of times for each 'challenge'?
Could people who dislike this movie actually be disappointed that it's not a Jordan biopic? I hate sports, professional sports most of all. But I'm a bit geeky about marketing and design and then that je ne sais quoi. Heart? Spirit? Guts? Drive? Doing something one truly believes is the right thing to do? That is part of this film.
Loved Damon and Davis. Totally creeped out by Affleck but then that's what I feel when I see photos of Knight so guess he nailed it?
I'm not usually a soundtrack music kind of cinephile and will downrate a movie because I notice it. I loved most of the choices here though, and yeah, I NOTICED. Anytime The Alan Parsons Project makes it is a good day. Is it any wonder they choose "Sirius"? It's like so basketball. But using "Telescope" from Body Double (1984) for the shoe reveal was just ... so ... creepy ... AWESOME!
But the single most inspiring thing about this movie, for me, is the production design. Sure, it was shot in SoCal though IMDb doesn't mention some unit working just down the road from me (and I've been to a meeting at the Nike World HQ though it actually had nothing to do with Nike or sports) and featuring shots from around greater Portland that I actually recognize. But there were so many little things that I could say, I remember that! I had one of those. I used some of that. Yes, there were anachronisms, but overall, I really felt transported back in time to a place I know but didn't know back then. And it supported the story as production design must, making it come alive, and giving actors the props to breathe life into their characters.
It's been a very long time since I've been this exhilarated after watching a movie. A very long time indeed. 19,658 checks and counting.
And remember, just because you wear Air Jordan's doesn't mean you play like Mike. Your mileage will likely vary.
from this discussion: it is reported that not only does a five minute version exist, it was exhibited in January 2024 at the Österreichisches Filmmuseum
All you need is your favorite beverage and some eggnog.
Anytime something cringe-worthy happens on screen, take a shot with an eggnog chaser. Chances are, unless you like your movies like this, you'll get good and wasted. Might need medical treatment if you don't pace yourself. You've been warned!
Ragnar reborn as a Muslim. Otherwise pretty generic spy chase flick complete with usual clichés -- I gotta get home for my kid's birthday/big game/graduation/play/etc -- yawn.
So, what does it say when you spend the entire picture thinking the superhero looks like a sunburnt Ken doll -- and then they even have a line about Barbie, let's go party
Imagine John McClane (at his worst) mates with Ripley's nemesis and has a mutant offspring that has something to do with zombies. Well, this is even worse.
Get that they are trying to explore all these 'issues', many of which play so prominently in the culture wars, and while I enjoyed it, it does feel a bit heavy handed at times (though not necessarily preachy, though clearly some will feel it is). Would have preferred a bit more nuanced writing but glad it's something different, not just more SatC (especially after those horrid movies!) It's great to see beloved characters grow, evolve, change rather than the usual sitcom repetition of the formula.

Could have just as easily been titled: Look Who Was Talking 70,000 Years Ago. Seems like I found it just as annoying as Look Who's Talking Now.But the animation is pretty good.
