I originally dismissed this movie already at the title, expecting it to be at best a half decent action/racing movie, but more likely the bastard son of a computergame and a hip hop music video. You know, tons of CG cars, lens flares, and girls showing off their t&a just for the sake of it, topped with B-class actors and TV stars and a licensed title so the marketing guys has something to sell.
Then one night before going to bed I was just doing a quick zapping on my TV, and walked straight into the gas station scene of this movie, and quickly realised that my expectations were way off. So I decided to PVR it and save it for a later date. And I'm glad I did. Sure, if you want to find flaws in this movie there's plenty to be had, but I had a great time. Aaron Paul was great, Imogen Poots was great, and they really shine together. Also, I think Michael Keaton really owned his scenes as well as adding a Vanishing Point flavour to the story and the action. And oh, the action. "Real stunts" may not be something you expect from a video game adaptation, but here it is, and used to great effect. Still, fans of the video game series will not be left in the dark, as the racing scenes includes plenty of throwbacks to the series, including the police chases and the winner-takes-all supercar showdowns.
After the terrible Origins: Wolverine and the anemic The Wolverine I had given up on seeing the big screen really doing justice to one of my favorite comic book characters. Then Deadpool proves that somebody really has the balls to make a superhero movie that isn't a PG13 video game cutscene. And then they announce Logan, with an R rating and an Old Man Logan-esque setting.
Long story short: They nailed it. This is the definite Wolverine movie. Forget the other two Wolverine movies. Check out X-Men 1, 2, First Class and Days of Future Past with your kids if you like. But this one is a must see.
Wow. I have checked one single film on this list, and that places me at position #232 among all ICM users on this list. Obviously not a list with a lot of activity.
Crank - the video game. Or should that be Call of Grand Theft Mirrors - the movie?
So yeah, what armyofshadows said. It is a video game. On top of the elements he mentions, I would like to add:
- a sidekick talking you through the tutorial, the story and any new gameplay mechanics
- clearly defined mission objectives and waypoints
- scripted events and cutscenes
- powerups
If you like outrageous over the top action and/or video games, you will be fine. If you get dizzy by the sign of blood or the thought of climbing into a ferris wheel, you should probably sit this one out.
Man, I have so many issues with this movie I am not even sure where to start. Yeah, I know, it's supposed to be a comedy and I can't expect everything to be realistic etc, but still.
Let's start with the basic premise: Taking a convict into custody to help solving a crime, then
giving him a badge no less, and a gun, and turning him lose
. And then
calling him a nigger, and proceding to beat the shit out of him, for no good reason except to establish some sort of rank or bond or whatever the f**k that was supposed to be about
. I guess that was really funny, huh?
But I think my biggest gripe is the use of guns. I kid you not, almost every single scene where a gun is used is ridiculous in it's very own way. For instance,
firing 8 rounds without reloading from a revolver that holds 6 bullets
. Or
cops aiming and firing firearms in the direction of general public, even shotguns
. Or
cops firing at crooks holding hostages, sometimes without aiming first
. Or
Billy Bear pulling a knife and slowly walking with a menacing grin towards someone having him at point blank, even if Reggie does not look comfortable with the gun
. I found myself a number of times thinking "WTF, did that really just happen?" and then rewind some seconds just to confirm that yes, that did indeed happen.
The fact that the
bad guys kill a bunch of people without really needing to or having a real motive
is not even the biggest issue here, it just makes the bad guys look incredibly dumb and cartoonish. The same goes for
the protagonist putting 7 slugs into the antagonist in the end.
, but then again judging from real lifes headlines these things happens all the time to black people that are pulled over for speeding or whatever, so I wouldn't expect any less from a cop holding a grudge against a cop killer.
