This is also known as "The Human Condition".

@aneic, you're right, I hadn't thought of that at all. That could be an interesting aspect to follow.

I hope I don't come across as overly skeptical of this, because I'm not. I think it's a nice addition. I just happen to think that its usefulness right now is limited without the other features of iCM 2.0 (such as the "I own this" feature and personal lists). But I guess it's better to get the "rush" over with now and then we'll have a database full of movies to pick from when the rest of the iCM 2.0 features go live.

Oh great, someone just imported a lost film from IMDb.

Maybe we should use it as a "check trap" to fool cheaters? :-)

Anyone who checks this movie does so in error. This movie is LOST! NO COPIES EXIST!

You are probably confusing it with the "Der Golem, wie Er in die Welt kam" from 1920 - which is known in English as "The Golem".

@crinderman, good point about the difference between checking and rating a movie. I know I'm occasionally conflicted when it comes to a movie I know I've seen but can't remember well enough to rate.

But for people (like me) who don't use IMDb to keep tabs on their movies, this doesn't really do much, since someone still has to go to IMDb to import the movies here before you can check them. (Can you believe the amount of checking I'm going to have to do now if I want to use iCM to keep track of all the movies I've ever seen?)

And boy has iCM become slow today. I guess there's a huge rush to import movies. If this keeps up (I don't think it will) maybe the guys should tweak the "background work" a little.

Erh... I'm not quite sure what to make of this.

Now we can import any movie from IMDb, but we can't put them into any lists, other than the general "checked" list - but adding them won't do anything to our rankings (since only "official" movies count and they're already in the system).

So what's the rush to import movies? If you're importing movies to keep track of what you've seen, doesn't IMDb already do that for you? The only thing I see this do is boost your number of checked movies next to your name on the top of the page. While that may be nice, I don't really see the point.

I think this is a nice feature, but on its own it seems just a little gimmicky. I'm sure once iCM 2.0 goes live it'll be much more useful, since we'll be able to put those imported titles into personal lists and actually do something with all those imported movie titles.

Am I completely missing some larger point here?

That list received so many negative comments that it was decided to make it the first personal list. It'll show up when v. 2.0 goes live, I assume.

iCheckMovies already does that. You get "awards" when you've seen a certain number of movies on a list and you can set your account to connect to Twitter.

See? That's exactly why we need to be able to edit.

OIympia is in two parts on imdb, counted as one on TSPDT. (Just saw that one, btw, it's amazing!)

I'll second (third? fourth?) the documentaries request, I feel like a complete rube in that area and could use a good list.

And editing would be nice as well as some sort of notification (but as an option, I need to be able to switch such a off as well)

It's clearly a matter of personal preference, whether nominees, previous editions and ex-titles (which are basically just previous editions in a different guise) should be personal or official.

You can argue either way and have good points on both sides, but my personal preference is to keep those as personal lists.

This is not meant to disparage personal lists, I'd certainly subscribe to a personal list with all the Best Pic Oscar nominees (and be about 54% done), it's just that there is a categorical difference, in my mind, between a list of winners and a list of nominees (not one of quality, though, since many of the nominees are arguably better than the winners, but ultimately it's the statuette that makes the difference).

I also think that a list of nominees would (justly or unjustly) have a narrower appeal than a list of winners and I think that has to factor in as well.

I'd love to see David Thomson's list made official along with other "long" lists (The Guardian made one too, didn't they?)

In my opinion, lists of nominees, ex-titles, previous versions (and other has-beens) and filmographies and Christmas movie lists and personal favorites and so on (ad nauseam) would make for good personal lists, while I think the official lists should be reserved for more... uhm, well, "official" stuff, lists that are current and lists of various national awards (Bodil, Felix etc.) and some more lists from movie magazines (Sight & Sound, Cahiers or even Empire), established critics and organizations and perhaps even some more Oscar categories (Best Documentary Feature comes to mind).

Please feel free to disagree.

Queen Kelly has a tumultuous history and you can argue that it is from 1929 (when production halted), 1932 (Gloria Swanson's version), the 1960s (von Stroheim's version) or even 1985 (Kino's restored version). Silent Era has some good info about it.

You made this site what it is? Which parts exactly do you think you made?

If anyone has made this site what it is, it's Erik and Piet. The rest of us are just using it, not making it.
