Although the movie is based on an interesting story with an amazing cast, it comes off as nothing but a surprisingly poorly acted and extremely angry comment on American society.
The message of the movie was good; dealing with the racism, gang violence and the characters background story.
But the movie was waaaay to hollywood. It was way to easy, with no real conflicts. It was so "feel-good", ended up being a bit too boring, and the message it was trying to get across, wasn't very powerful.
What ever happened to movies with intelligent humor?
If you think of the movie as a thursday night "I need to just shut off my brain for a couple of hours and watch a dumb but entertaining movie" this movie is perfect. It's got some catchy phrases, a light story, some good space action, silly references to other movies, etc.
But if you're looking for a well-written, well-performed sci-fi movie, this is definitely not the one.
None of the characters were very well-written, and tbh the character who was most interesting and who was easiest to sympathize with was Groot, despiteonly having three words to say.
Several times, we came close to a deeper meaning to some of the other characters, but just as something was about to be revealed (
for example Rocket's story, about being torn apart and put together 7 times
), some (I'm sorry) stupid catchy phrase was said and we moved on.
Only the main story line was finished. The few side stories that were introduced, were never finished, and even the main storyline was predictable from second one.
I did find myself smiling and laughing at times, but the farther towards the end of the movie, the more I found myself yawning and getting annoyed at the stupid writing and repetitive action scenes.
I truly had hoped for more in this movie, especially considering how high it's rating is, but I must say I am truly disappointed.
I love superheroes, I love Sci-Fi, I love action and I love Marvel, but this film just doesn't do it for me. Because most of all, I do love well written movies with intelligent stories, characters and humor.
I guess it is time to reconsider using IMDB's Top 250 list as a reference for good movies...
But I will have to give this movie another chance in a few months, sometimes the mood you're in before watching the movie, affects your opinion!
We did a drinking game to this movie: drink every time you see green slime, something disgusting or something WTF. Finish your entire glass every time you see boobs or something racial!
Visually extremely well made. So beautiful, with lots of great shots of the dessert and experimenting too.
I never knew the dessert could be so beautiful!
But story-wise it was lacking a bit. I never really god the feeling, that she thought it was tough walking the 3200km, and I never really got a feeling for why she didn't like being around people, and why she felt the need to walk.
But Mia Wasikowska did a great job as always. Superbly acting!
This might just be another mediocre/kinda stupid movie for people who didn't grow up with Mary Poppins (probably why it hasn't gotten more positive reviews, but for me, who grew up with Mary Poppins, this is such a wonderful movie, which brings back a lot of great memories!

Though I don't believe it was Oscar worthy, but definitely one of the better movies from 2011!

It had nothing to do with the other movies. Where were the cool cars, races, half-naked women?? And what's up with all the killing...
The first half of the movie was pretty fun. But the second half was just over too fast. It was like they hadn't thought the ending through. It was hurried and what was supposed to be the climax of the story, was just about the most boring part.
Very predictable, but then again, most superhero movies are!
