As of now this terriblle movie marks the new low point of Hollywoods sad nostalgia escapism. The book this mess is based on wasn't very good to begin with, but this movie is even worse. A story that makes no sense, boring charakters, cringe inducing dialogues, nonstop exposition, CGI hell with obvious product placement and a hypocritical schmaltzy message.
A group of liberal stereotypes and a coke snorring banker (how original) meet for a dinner party. They get into a fight and after 70 minutes thankfully it's all over with a stupid conclusion. Has some good and some bad performances (Cillian Murphy, my god...). Somewhat reminiscent of Carnage, but bad.
It's like Ridley Scott wanted to make a philosophical space exploration movie but couldn't get it green lit without shoehorning some Aliens into it. So you get a rather generic monster movie without any real atmosphere on the one hand and some trivial pseudo-philosophical themes that are not nearly explored enough on the other hand.
The beautiful, partially even stunning cinematography are not enough to make up for its lifeless characters, ridiculous dialogue and overall pretentiousness.
A beautiful and intense slow burning horror-drama that lets the audience themselves put together the horrible events it only hints at. Not a flawless movie, it suffers a bit from subpar performances and a somewhat redundant and aimless narrative, but the good outweighs the bad.
