Finally a list that has Idle Hands in it. Glad to see a good assortment of uncritical lists to hit ICM again.

The review of the wonderful American Cyborg: Steel Warrior is a one gun (out of five) and concludes with "For drunks, junkies and desperadoes only"

It's just a list of reviews (and trivia!), and they aren't all positive.

TSPDT is important because it drives the conversation and it spawns 4 or 5 other lists, and heavily influences many others. If somehow we got to those 1000 films without its influence , it wouldn't be important.

Is there an actually metric that shows people are interested in the Action list, taste aside is a reference not a list of films to watch, or are the checks the by product of the list being what HBO showed after Dream On.

At some point we talked about why the MST3K movie shouldn't have a list (and the bottom imdb 250) and the same logic should apply here.

quote:
1. Is it a good list?
2. Is it from an authoritative source?
3. Does the list fill a void (or does it complement an existing list)?
4. Is there a significant amount of interest in the list?

is a good start - but to avoid more lists like that awful Action list it needs to have some language around authoritative and ranked. Lists that are comprehensive weaken the value of each check.

I would also start look at the number of new checks a list provides, while it is nice to get a bunch of golds on new list day, it would be nice to to have a requirement (for a while at least) to have to include a certain % of new films. It will also reduce the hivemind that goes around certain films.

Wait until you sit through Bird on Wire and American Ninja 2 before acting like this is a fun list.

I think the separate lists would have been more interesting and accessible.

MST3K is popular because of the commentary, watching those movies (outside of danger diabolik) is a miserable time.

i do agree with @chemosh6969 regarding the personal lists and updates/duplicates etc. it is inviting disaster.

i'd prefer for iCM to be a curated experience, but it doesn't seem like that's important (or possible) with the staff.

They key would be to make the submission process transparent - a basic vote up /down system would work.

A list so good they couldn't keep the source active.

Looking through the various reports on this list it seems like the film had to be on DVD as of 2005. It also seems like its just 10 groups of separate lists put together, which explains the odd ordering.

It doesn't make any baring on the competitive part of the site but it makes a huge difference in the time spent improving the site. we could have yearly AFI lists and maybe proper forums if time wasn't spent on these pointless features. As the site moves into a period in which profits need to be realized, preventing feature creep is important.

the showgirls vs savages problem is fun because showgirls is on two lists one is for AV Club's Cult Favorites, which is understandable and has a nice write up about each film and why they included it and the other is a list from some forum with any framing device to understand why they chose that film. What type of list is more helpful for the end user and what type of list would you want to see more of? It's not always about what film were chosen but why people chose them. That's why its fun to go through some of these lists and see and able to read why people are in love with Irma Vep and the watch Judex.

Let's not make this an argument about elitism.

I personally don't care if the lists have canon films or not. I just don't want user created lists.

http://www.criticker.com/film/Branded_to_Kill/

that is what i'm afraid of, and since it obviously exists already why create it again.

but i mean it seems like they've already started this route anyway with:

@minlshaw it it's the three step in the tour, the point is to check movies on lists and compare to other members of the site.

http://www.icheckmovies.com/help/tour/

anyway the check any movie is a bad thing because it diverts resources away from the list making and updating and most importantly vetting what lists go up. it also takes away resources away from developing the social aspect of the site - and increases reliance on some facebook group instead of developing a forum in which we can actually talk about the films. it's hard to even want to leave comments on films because i'll never know if someone will read and respond to it. those are more important to the health of the site. there are plenty of sites you can check off whatever movies you want and make whatever lists you want. why did this need to change into one of those sites?

I'm still of the opinion that giving users more control is still antithetical to the purpose of the site and nothing about this roll out has changed my mind.

On the plus side I was able to check Chrome and Hot Leather as "seen." Just so everyone knows.
